Our increasing consumption of natural resources is leading to more and more waste being produced. The amount of waste produced by Cheshire households alone in 2003/04 was over 443,747 tonnes. The amount of waste produced by households is increasing by 5% every year, equivalent to 21,150 tonnes. Currently, 75% of household waste is sent to landfill.

UK Government household waste recycling targets have now been set for all local authorities. In Cheshire, we recycled 26.5% of household waste in 2004/5 and 31% in 2005/6. There are 16 household waste recycling centres in Cheshire which recycle glass, paper, oil, plastic, clothing, batteries, cans, card and green waste. Household waste is composed of around one third green waste (garden and kitchen waste) and one third paper and card. Both of these fractions are biodegradable and so could be composted at home.

Cheshire County Council, in partnership with the six District Councils, has been working to produce a Joint Household Waste Management Strategy to reduce, reuse and recycle Cheshire's waste. To ensure this, a number of actions are proposed, including the provision of kerbside recycling schemes to households; home and community composting; waste awareness campaigns and improved facilities at our household waste recycling centres.
